
AMHERST — Jerze Webb went 3 for 3 in pins as he led William Byrd to a second-place finish at the Region 4D wrestling tournament at Amherst County.
Webb, who pinned his first two opponents in the first period, completed his region title at 145 pounds by pinning Amherst County’s Samari Brogdon with 26 seconds left in the bout.
Webb was joined on the top of podium by teammates Derek Burton at 113 pounds, who decisioned Salem’s Jeremy Muncy 5-0 and Josh Moore at 170.
Jefferson Forest finished third and had four champions — Nick Kaufman (106), Matthew Wirth (120), Floyd Wells (132) and Carter Shipp (195).
Wells beat Salem’s Alex Royston 4-0 to claim his crown.
Carroll County finished fourth.
Tayzon Nicholson of Blacksburg was the other Timesland winner. He won a 7-4 decisino over William Byrd’s Clay Pilgreen.
Two other Terrier wrestlers — Trevor Thompson (182) and Zach Figart (220) finished second.

PH’s Wilson wins region title
ORANGE — Patrick Henry’s Chauncey Wilson edged out Brooke Point’s Justis Bell in the 132-pound division to claim a 3-2 victory in the Region 5A tournament Saturday at Orange County High.
The Patriots had runner-up finishes from Elize Nyabenda (103), Ryan Foutz (160) and Tyson Gordon (182) while Angel Casteneda placed fourth in the 285-pound division.
Patrick Henry took fifth place overall in the team standings with 133 points. Brooke Point won the match with 220.5 points, Mountain View was second (201), host Orange County placed third (181.5), and North Stafford finished just ahead of PH.
William Fleming was eighth overall, thanks to a runner-up finish from Keyvar Townsend (120) and third-place wins by Jacob Henderson (132), Hunter Huddleston (145) and Solomon Smith (170). Fleming’s Tyrece Payne finished fourth in the 182-pound division.

Grayson County claims region title
BIG STONE GAP — Grayson County’s Tanner Jones and Cole Anders each pinned their opponents to win championships in their respective weight divisions and the Blue Devils won the team competition Saturday at the Region 2D match.
Jones defeated Richlands’ Matthew Burke in just 57 seconds at 106 pounds while Anders knocked off John Battle’s Ethan Brummit in 1 minute, 25 seconds at 113 pounds, helping Grayson County edge the Blue Tornado by six points in the overall standings, 161-155.
John Battle was third (121), Graham took fourth (111) and Union, the host school, rounded out the top five (95).
Marion finished just behind Union and got a big win from Will Moss in the 285-pound class when he pinned Virginia High’s Travis Williams in just 40 seconds in the final.

Rural Retreat takes second to Grundy
Rural Retreat had just one region champion, but did well enough overall to finish second to defending Class 1 champion Grundy at Castlewood High School.
The Indians’ Ethan Martin won the 182-pound division, defeating Grundy’s Ritchie Smith by a 3-2 decision.
Rural Retreat had five others finish second.
Galax had two champions — Joshua Spurlin at 138 pounds and Caxton Vaught at 160 on its way to a third-place finish. Vaught decisioned Rural Retreat’s Wyatt Sage.
George Wythe was fourth and was led by Sebastian Lamrouex’s title at 120 pounds, he pinned Galax’s Ty Townsend.
Noah Widener of Chilhowie won the 145-pound division by beating George Young of Covington.

Eagles’ Richards wins at 160 pounds
MIDLOTHIAN — Franklin County’s Brian Richards pinned Chase Giegling of Cosby in the second period to win the 160-pound division at the Region 6B tournament at Clover Hill High School.
The Eagles, who had nine wrestlers finish in the top four, were fourth in the team standings. Riverbend was the region champion.
Runners-up from Franklin County were Logan Arnold (120 pounds), Devin Ross (195) and Bryson Chrisman (220).
Finishing fourth for the Eagles were Nate Stafford (113), Stefan Knott (145), Kaleb Grindstaff (152), Bryar Rutrough (182) and Ethan Berger (285).

CHATHAM — Three wrestlers won their weight class to lead Roanoke Catholic to a third-place finish at the 2019 VIC meet, held at Hargrave Military Academy, which won the team competition by one point over runner-up Fishburne Military.
Thomas Becker won the crown at 126 pounds via a 1-0 decision over Fishburne’s Alex Tackas. Paul Kuehler won at 145 pounds via a 16-10 decision over Covenant’s Charlie Lepage and Ethan Leonard pinned Fishburne’s Jack Gregory to win the title at 152 pounds.
