AGNES M. PHILLIPS
YOUNGSTOWN – Agnes M. Phillips, 88, of the city’s west side, passed away Saturday morning, March 23, 2019, at Hospice House following a brief illness, with her family by her side.
Agnes, who was known to many as “Agie,” was born July 20, 1930, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Stefan and Katarina “Katie” Stupar Hudak, and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a 1948 graduate of Chaney High School, and she enjoyed many monthly luncheons with her graduating class right up until her illness.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Agie worked for Dollar Bank/National City Bank for 35 years, retiring in 1994. In her younger years, she worked for Ohio Water Service in Struthers.
Mrs. Phillips was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and belonged to the Rosary Society, the Ladies Guild, was a bingo volunteer and an organizer with the Young at Heart group. Agie also belonged to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Anne Court No, 1875, and most recently was a member of St. Christine Church in Youngstown.
Agnes leaves her husband of 65 years, Lawrence J. Phillips, whom she married Jan. 2, 1954; four children, L.J. Phillips of Longwood, Fla., Mark S. (Dianne) Phillips of Poland, Jeff M. (Mary Beth) Phillips of Youngstown, and Kathy M. (Kevin) Schmidt of Austintown; a brother William (Kay) Hudak; 12 grandchildren, Kira, Felicia, Marci, Elizabeth, Tom, Andrew, Katie, Krista, Sean, Jamie, Dylan, and Matt; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who all affectionately called her “Baba.”
A sister, Mary Jane Macala, and a daughter-in-law, Sally J. Phillips, are deceased.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin Wednesday, March 27, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, and will continue at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Christine Church on South Schenley Avenue in Youngstown.
Agie’s family thanks the staff with Hospice House for the kindness shown and care given to Mrs. Phillips during her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
