A little lighthearted tension in the LaPratt house?

Utica volleyball coach Jeff LaPratt is married to Caitlyn LaPratt, the volleyball coach at Eisenhower.

When those teams met in the annual Utica Community Schools event on Monday, Jeff’s Chieftains eked past Ike, 28-26, 29-27.

Utica also defeated Ford 25-19, 25-19 to emerge as the event champion.

Kayla Jacob led the way for Utica with 19 kills, 13 receptions and 9 digs. Raeleen Sobetski had 21 kills, 2 aces and 3 service points. Jenna Walczy had 2 aces, 9 service points, 7 receptions and 5 digs. Abby Rissman had 3 aces, 8 service points, 34 receptions and 9 digs. 

Also for Utica; Alyssa Jacob had 4 aces, 8 service points, 10 receptions and 7 digs; Anna Bork had 5 kills and 5 blocks; Alyssa Pulizzi had 4 kills and 1 block; and Bri Rowoldt had 12 service points, 1 ace, 5 kills, 41 assists and 10 digs. 

Utica’s overall record is now 4-2. The Chieftains play Wednesday at the Romeo Tournament.

The Chieftains opened the 2019 season at the Dakota Invitational on Saturday. There, they defeated Anchor Bay and Walled Lake Central, but fell to Birmingham Marian and Stoney Creek.

Rissman finished with 9 service points, 1 ace, 51 receptions, 3 assists and 39 digs; Lexi Maxwell had 1 kill; Rowoldt had 15 service points, 2 aces, 5 kills, 1 reception, 49 assists and 24 digs; Bork had 6 kills and 10 blocks; Kayla Jacob had 17 service points, 3 aces, 32 kills, 33 receptions, 4 blocks, 1 assist and 32 digs; Bri Confer had 2 service points; Alaina Mancinni had 2 service points; Walczy had 6 service points, 17 receptions and 26 digs; Alyssa Jacob had 23 service points, 2 aces, 22 receptions and 28 digs; Madi Davis had 13 kills, 12 receptions, 2 blocks, 1 assist and 2 digs; Sobetski had 1 service point, 1 ace, 12 kills, 9 receptions, 1 block and 5 digs; while Pulizzi had 15 service points, 1 ace, 3 kills, 3 blocks and 1 dig. 

While the Chieftains will not be involved, the annual VolleyWar in the Shores will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5. Competing will be Lakeview, Lake Shore and South Lake.

CHIPPEWA VALLEY 6, FRASER 4

Coach Gerry Haggarty’s Big Reds came out on top in this MAC crossover contest.

Chippewa Valley competes in the MAC Red Division, while Fraser is in the MAC White.

COUSINO 3, FORD 1

How about a congratulatory holler for Anthony Waller?

Waller scored two goals and had an assist for the Patriots in this MAC crossover game. Aymen Khoshaba scored and added an assist. Ben Husic had the other Cousino assist.

MEMPHIS 3, CROSWELL-LEXINGTON 1

The Yellowjackets bumped their record to 3-1 with this Greater Thumb Conference victory.

Scoring for the victors were Drew Sniesak, Josh White and Jacob Nutaitis. Nutaitis also collected a pair of assists. Joey Gentner also had an assist.

Goalkeeper Leonardo Molina made five stops.

The Yellowjackets have also beaten Laker, 5-1; and Austin Catholic, 9-1. Their loss came against Croswell-Lexington, 1-0.

Memphis welcomes Bad Axe Wednesday afternoon.

 

ANCHOR BAY 3, ROMEO 0

Coach Nate Williams was rightfully proud of his team’s effort and composure.

Matt Muzia and Ethan Welchner both registered a goal and an assist. Tanner Hodgson also scored. Zack Slezak added an assist.

Cody Smith and Ryan Glinski both had strong performances.

ANCHOR BAY 8, WARREN MOTT 0

Carson Hodgson scored three goals to help lead the Tars to victory. Also scoring were Tanner Hodgson, Ethan Welchner, Sal DiLorenzo, Matt Muzia and Tommy Mittlelstadt.

Welchner, Tanner Hodgson and Matt Briedis all had two assists. Also getting assists were Muzia, Sal DiLorenzo, Stefan Bezanovski, Kian Collins, and Cody Smith

Goalkeeper Hazen Heskett earned the shutout.

 

EISENHOWER 4, MARYSVILLE 0

Goalkeeper Eric DeJong kept DeBall out of DeGoal for the Eagles.

Scoring were Liam Smith, Evan Jakuc, Jakson Jaku and Gjon Malakuqi.  Collecting assists were Devin White, Dominic Nalou and Shayne Baylet.

EISENHOWER 1, GROSSE POINTE NORTH 0

Evan Jakuc scored on an assist from Jakson Jaku. Evan DeJong earned his second shutout of the season. However, Evan Boardman had to come off the bench to make a penalty kick save.

IMLAY CITY 2, ARMADA 0

The Tigers were blanked in this BWAC match.
