JMU weekly sports recap (September 9-16) | Sports - The Breeze

It was a busy week for JMU athletics; several teams were in action, many of whom were either at home or playing in Virginia. Here’s what you might have missed.

Football (2-1)

JMU football picked up its second win of the season in a 63-12 drubbing of Morgan State. Three quarterbacks — redshirt senior Ben DiNucci, redshirt junior Cole Johnson and redshirt sophomore Gage Maloney — passed for six touchdowns, which tied a program record. Sophomore wide receiver Devin Ravanel and freshman wide receiver Kevin Curry Jr. scored their first collegiate touchdowns.

The Dukes didn’t miss a beat despite a 74-minute delay due to lightning in the area. Their defense only allowed 79 yards on the ground and intercepted their first pass of the season. JMU plays its first FCS away game on Saturday at Chattanooga. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Men’s soccer (3-2-0, 2-0-0 CAA)

JMU men’s soccer beat Elon 6-0 on Saturday. Freshman forward Dennis Mensah recorded a hat trick for his first collegiate goals, and senior midfielder Manuel Ferriol added two goals and an assist.

The Dukes outshot the Phoenix 12-9 and 9-2 in shots on goal. JMU plays twice this week at home: Tuesday night versus No. 1 Wake Forest and Saturday night against Mount St. Mary’s.

Women’s soccer (2-6-0)

JMU women’s soccer split its two games this week. On Thursday, the Dukes snapped a four-match losing streak in a 3-2 victory over George Mason. Senior forward Haley Crawford and junior midfielder/forward Ebony Wiseman accounted for the three goals, with Wiseman scoring twice.

On Sunday, JMU got blown out by No. 11 Duke. JMU managed only four shots, all coming in the second half. The Dukes play twice on the road this week: at Liberty on Thursday and at LSU on Sunday.

Men’s tennis

JMU men’s tennis opened up its schedule in the Liberty Invitational over the weekend. Junior Alvaro Arce, sophomores Stefan Petrovic and William Karpinski and freshman Holden Koons all competed for the Dukes. The quartet got swept on Friday, and Koons won his first collegiate match on Saturday.

On Sunday, Koons and Arce faced off against each other, with Koons winning in straight sets. JMU competes next in the UNCG Invitational this weekend.

Volleyball (5-4)

JMU volleyball competed in the Gator Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Friday, the Dukes swept Long Beach State 3-0 before getting swept by Florida later in the day. 

JMU swept USF with sets of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-20 on Saturday. The Dukes play at home Tuesday versus VCU, with the first serve set for 6 p.m.

Field Hockey (2-4)

JMU field hockey went 0-2 this weekend, with both games taking place in College Park, Maryland. On Friday, the Dukes fell to American. The Eagles scored twice in the first half, while JMU had to wait until 56 minutes into the game to put one in the back of the net. 

On Saturday, the Dukes got shut out 4-0 by No. 4 Maryland. The Terrapins outshot JMU 25-11, including 17-5 in shots on goal. The Dukes play Old Dominion at home on Sunday, with game time set for noon.

Cross Country

JMU cross country competed in the JMU Invitational on Saturday. The Dukes finished third out of six teams with 67 points. Freshman Laura Webb finished sixth out of 60 runners with a time of 21:50.5. 

Elon won the event with 32 points, and Delaware was second with 41 points. The Dukes are off for nearly two weeks before competing in the Queens City Invitational on Sept. 27.
